Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the Sidekick Data plan prices increase on 11/20/2008. I was browsing around t-mobiles site and saw the price. Wow, I couldn’t believe it. I went back today and verified it.
Right now, as far as I can tell, this is for new subscribers only. If you have a sidekick data plan already, you will keep paying the same price you currently are. You will be “grandfathered” in.
If you have a voice plan, the new sidekick unlimited data, text, chat and email plan in 34.99 a month! That’s a 15 dollar increase over the old sidekick unlimited data plan. For you math lovers out there, that’s a 75% percent increase!! Ouch!
If you just get the standalone unlimited Sidekick data plan with no voice option then it is 54.99 a month, up from 29.99 a month. That is a 25 dollar per month increase, or 83.33 percent! Double Ouch!
There is another Sidekick Data plan available as well. It unlimited data, chat, and email plus 400 text messages for 24.99. Since most Sidekick owners text a lot, this probably will not be as popular.
The stand alone option of the data plan + 400 text messages is 44.99 a month.
The Prepaid Sidekick Data plan is still unlimited web, IM, email and texting for 1 dollar a day.
See the chart below for a side by side comparison of the pricing.

Why the price increase? It is part of T-mobile new web browsing experience. Almost of all the data plans are similar in price now regardless of the phone.
T-mobile is calling this web2go. Here is a snippet from the press release dated 11/20/2008.
Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc., is introducing web2goSM, an intuitive and improved Web browsing experience designed to work across T-Mobile’s portfolio of phones. Web2go makes it easier to view and navigate the Web from basic voice phones and smartphones alike, providing customers with better Web browsing, improved search with Yahoo! oneSearch™, a customizable home page and a simplified shopping and download experience.
“We believe mobile Web access appeals to everyone, and web2go makes it easier than ever for customers to surf the Web from our broad lineup of phones,” said Denny Marie Post, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA. “In addition to giving our customers the mobile Web, web2go provides a store front that will continue to grow with our customers, offering a range of products from the latest content to new innovative applications.”
Hopefully, this ridiculous increase in price for the Sidekick data plan means that a new T-mobile Sidekick 3G phone is in the works. It is pretty pricey for the slow EDGE speed network that the current T-mobile Sidekicks use.

If its no for existing customers then I am fine with it. But if its a raise in everyones bill then I am changing my provider. I might go with sprint because that’s a major increase. I can see if its a 5 dollar difference …. but 15 dollars is a lot now that we are in a recession.
It’s not for exisiting customers unless you upgrade your device. They might get you then!
This price increase is insane. For existing customers it may seem like nothing, but a friend of mine got his sidekick slide 3 weeks ago and just added the sidekick plan today to find out now he has to pay an extra $30. There should be a petition against this increase from both future and current sidekick users. T-Mobile won’t generate much profit from this by making people think twice.

I agree. It is a pretty steep increase for people. The low data plan price was one of the things that helped make the sidekicks so popular. It helped people overlook things like not being able to add your own ringtones and things like that.
